We B-Girlz—Hip Hop Festival

During the course of the Women’s Hip Hop Year 2008 “We B-Girlz” has organised a one-month festival during August in Berlin.

Covering all elements of the Hip Hop movement through events, exhibitions and workshops “We B-Girlz” is paying tribute to all the female members and activists of this culture from the early days till now. The idea is to present strong role models and to encourage girls to become an active part of the Hip Hop culture.

In August, Berlin will stage numerous battles and shows with stars from the national and international Hip Hop scene, such as Roxanne Shanté from New York, who gained world-wide reputation with her Rap-Song “Roxanne’s Revenge” in 1984 in response to UTFO’s song “Roxanne, Roxanne”. A discussion with Alice Schwarzer, founder and publisher of the feminist magazine “Emma”, about “Feminism and Hip Hop” will take place at “Alte Feuerwache”.

The “Eiszeitkino” in Kreuzberg will present a fine selection of Hip Hop movies by women for women and a great range of workshops will give girls the opportunity to get an insight into the elements and techniques of Graffiti-Writing, Rapping, DJing, Beatboxing and Break-Dancing.

A highlight of the festival will be the exhibition “Hip Hop Ladies with Attitude”, a retrospective of Martha Coopers work looking at the history of women in the Hip Hop movement.

The festival will close with a huge concert at Cassiopeia on the 29th and a dance festival including shows and battles at the Universal Hall on the 30th of August.
